NETWORKS ARE A NECESSARY EVIL
As a professional system integrator, you know that the customer's network is becoming more and more important in support of all the control system and Internet of Things (IoT) devices expected to be supported. Face it, without a robust and reliable network, you can't deliver any kind of custom integration experience. And with the rise in telecommuting and the end users' reliance on Internet access as the primary source for everything from entertainment to communications & daily shopping, a secure and reliable connection is expected to be the minimum level of service delivered.
As a system integrator, you are hired to be a subject matter expert, regardless of your networking background. As such you may be legally exposed as a consultant and/or project manager.
Consultants: Unfortunately, consultants can be liable for cyber security even if they didn’t create the IT solution that was compromised. Merely recommending an IT product can make you liable. So if you advise a client to use an insecure product and data is compromised, a client could blame you.
Project Managers: As a project manager, remember that “stuff” sometimes rolls uphill, too. If your subcontractor makes a mistake that leads to a data breach, the client could sue you. Mistakes by the people you manage can end up costing you.
Some of the more common networking related risks your home and business automation projects may be exposed to include...
- Data breaches
- Cyber attacks
- Latency issues
- Data loss
- Missed deadlines
As scary as this all sounds, there are some immediate steps you can take to protect yourself:
- Insure your business with a Professional Liability Insurance policy which covers cyber liability & data breach loss.
- Recommend and use products that exceed the minimum reasonable level of protection and ensure essential controls are met as recognized by industry standards and professionals such as the FIREFX Network Guardian.
A FIREWALL IS NOT ENOUGH
Today, the common network protection consists of deploying one or more router/firewalls. Unfortunately, the standard router/firewall is not a true security device and offers very little protection against hackers. While they are necessary, they only act like a locked front door; merely keeping honest people out of your network.
The fact is that 96% of network and data breaches originate behind the firewall and 92% of them are not highly difficult to achieve. So how do you protect your data you ask? According to one IDT911 Report about data breaches, firewalls "are only part of a larger chain of defense" and this TechGenix article points to the need for having an intrusion detection system "designed to monitor events in an IT system, thus complementing the first line of defense (behind firewalls) against attacks".
FIREFX NETWORK GUARDIAN IS THE ANSWER
While you can't secure all of the IoT devices you have deployed or will deploy in the future, you can take steps to secure the automation networks they reside on. The founders and developers of FIREFX have decades of combined network security experience, designing systems for law enforcement, military and corporate environments at the highest security levels. Our team also has the benefit of decades of combined experience developing network-based products for the custom integration market.
We have taken this knowledge and experience and applied it to the Network Guardian product line, designed specifically for home and business automation projects. The Network Guardian is a custom high security IoT router/firewall with a built in intrusion detection and protection system that updates attack threat patterns twice daily. This far exceeds the minimum reasonable level of protection and ensures essential network controls, protecting your customer's data and providing you protection.
FIREFX was formed in 2011 as the developers of the FIREFX High Performance Media System. As CEDIA members since 2012, they have a history of developing professional grade high-performance products for the custom integration market. Our award-winning media platform consistently delivered superior performance, reliability, and simplicity at a reasonable price point. FIREFX has now combined industry experience, proven software, military grade hardware components and years of military cyber experience to create an IoT network security device for home and business automation networks.
