A FastSigns franchisee in Austin, Texas needed to bring his network security up to par with a robust and simple solution to provide PCI compliance, rock-solid wired and wireless security, maximum reliability, and secure remote VPN access for the business owner.
The system integrator deployed a stock FIREFX D Series Network Guardian (FXNG-D4) security appliance as the networks primary router/firewall with no custom configuration. The three pre-configured VLANs were utilized in the following way.
- VLAN 1 (The LAN port) was used to handle all local business network traffic.
- VLAN 100 (The OPT 2 port) was used to isolate a single PC customers regularly used to import graphics and artwork from USB thumb-drives.
- VLAN 200 (The OPT 3 port) was used to isolate all wireless traffic including employee smartphones, guest/customer computers and tablets, etc.
- As with all FIREFX Network Guardians, and traffic in and out of the firewall and between each of the VLANs is automatically inspected for known attack vectors with profiles updated twice daily to provide maximum protection.
In addition to this, the franchisee used the pre-configured VPN client key and server to access his business network securely with his laptop from any location with built in two factor authentication.
The system integrator was able to install the system in under an hour with minimal technical skill, replacing the existing router with the FIREFX Network Guardian, increasing security, maintaining his network PCI compliance, and delivering military grade security at a fraction of the cost, complexity, and hassle of the competitors offerings. The results of increased security were seen immediately by the customer when the dashboard displayed multiple rejected connection attempts from other continents and blocked attacks from both the IPD/IDS (SNORT) and the firewall.
In addition to this, the system integrator was able to isolate the "dirty" artwork computer used by customers from the rest of his network and provide further isolation for wireless clients to prevent employees, guests, and customers from infecting his business network with their wireless devices. Add to this the freedom of working remotely with a secure connection and the result is a very happy customer indeed!
Of course, the System Integrator also benefits from having his own secure VPN connection to the customer's network so he won't have to always roll trucks to provide support and the built-in recurring revenue model with the FIREFX Network Guardian, making each installation sweeter than the last!
